Every year, many millions of pumpkins are grown in the silt fens around Emneth, Outwell, Upwell and Three Holes for the Halloween trade. From above, they make wonderful colourful patterns, especially when they are being harvested. So, in mid to late September, every year since I got my first drone we have made a trip to the area just to see the pumpkins. One farm alone grows up to four million pumpkins a year … just for Tesco!
From above, every unharvested field of pumpkins looks different. And it depends on many things – the colour of the soil, how ripe the crop is, whether the plants’ leaves have withered, how many plants didn’t survive to adulthood, the quality of the light on that day etc.
Harvesting
After the harvest, the ground is covered with wonderful patterns of tyre tracks.
